"Enhanced intelligence, clarity of senses, physical strength and vigour, optimum digestion and metabolism and delayed aging are the benefits guaranteed for those that practice Shodhana, also known as Panchakarma"

This is a five fold procedure for eliminating accumulated impurities from the mind, body and physiology. 'Pancha', in Sanskrit means five and 'karma' means action. Panchakarma therefore refers to the five actions that are considered the most powerful, purifying, and rejuvenating procedures in Ayurveda. This unique treatment aims at correcting the imbalance of the biological energies (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in order to maintain their inherent equilibrium. During each season of the year, one or more of the doshas accumulate, which results in an imbalance and susceptibility to illness. Changes occurs in both the mind and body of the individual. This entire process is designed to facilitate the deep rooted release of stress, and to encourage the individuals to surrender to the healing process. The five fold treatment during Panchakarma is not only intended for elimination of disease causing toxins but also to replenish the tissues with nourishment. Therefore this is also termed as Ayurvedic Rejuvenation therapy.

Panchkarma Methods

Panchakarma is undoubtedly the most eminent branch of Ayurveda. It is the collective terminology for several comprehensive procedures of purification and detoxification. The therapies can be considered the healing pillars of Ayurveda upon which the majority of treatment techniques are based

Vamana

Vamana is a therapy in which vomiting is induced for therapeutic benefit, after several days of careful preparation and a series of other therapies. As preparatory procedure, a patient is given oleation internally and externally. Along with internal administration of ghee processed with herbs according to dosha condition of the patient, external oleation and fomentation treatments are done for few days till the Vaidya observes ‘samyak snigdha lakshana’ or signs of proper oleation in the person undergoing Vamana. After this, the patient is given emetic medicines, certain decoctions and milk as per requirement. This process is best suited for managing vitiated kapha dosha and for eliminating toxins from the body tissues. Vamana treatment is particularly suggested for kapha-dominated conditions, such as but not limited to asthma, obesity, skin diseases like psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.

Virechana

Virechana In virechana, purgation or cleansing for removal of toxins through rectal route is induced. Preparatory procedures are almost similar to those of Vamana. In this therapy, the patient is given herbal preparations in order to induce purgation ultimately leading to clearing of the gut. Virechana detox therapy is comparatively safer and can be done at home. It is prescribed mainly for management of vitiated pitta dosha which may otherwise cause diseased condition. Ayurv Virechana is usually prescribed for management of pitta dominated conditions such as colitis, jaundice, hyperacidity, splenic disorders, ulcers, gastritis, intestinal colic, hypertension and stress related ailments.

Vasti

Vasti is one among the five classical Panchakarma and recommended for Vata disorders. The two Vasti treatments are: NiruhaVasti and AnuvasanaVasti - that are administered according to the patient's body condition and treatment requirement. Anuvasana Vasti is Enema Therapy using medicated oils or ghee and in Niruha, decoctions are used. According to Ayurveda, the prime seat of Vata dosha is the Pakwashaya(correlated to large intestine). So Vasti is the main therapy for all Vata disorders like constipation, neurological ailments, paralysis, flatulence, lower backache, gout and rheumatism. It restores and strengthens the body’s immunity. Vasti is a very effective detox and weight loss procedure.

Nasya

Nasya According to Ayurveda, Nasyam is the most important treatment for any disease or discomfort in the head region. Nostrils are considered as the doorway to the brain. Nasya begins with giving therapeutic face and shoulder massage with medicated oils followed by steam. Then medicated oil, powder or herbal juices are administered through the nose in particular doses as per requirement. This process detoxifies by eliminating the vitiated doshas accumulated in the nasopharynx, sinus cavities and throat. Ayurveda considers this therapy to be very effective for treating several psychological disorders, congestion, migraine, neurological disorders, premature aging and anorexia nervosa.

Raktamokshana

Raktamokshana is an effective blood purification therapy.Raktamokshana works both as curative as well as preventive therapy . Small quantities of blood are removed carefully to eliminate accumulated vitiated Pittadosha from the body. Blood is one of the main seats of Pitts and vitiated pitta directly results in many blood-borne as well as skin diseases.
